Arts and Letters Magazine is  accepting unsolicited submissions. We welcome submissions of previously unpublished news (particularly politics) articles and socially-relevant analysis and/or commentary.  We are also seeking poetry, fiction, and drama, non-fiction, reviews, essays, translations, exceptional photography, paintings, collages, drawings, cartoons, etc.  All material should be typed, single spaced, and page numbered with name and address in the upper left-hand corner of each page.   If you would like confirmation that your manuscript has been received, please enclose SASE or stamped postcard.

We are also looking for exceptional visual work: photography, paintings, collages, drawings, cartoons, etc.  We are looking for exceptional work from either experienced writers/artists or those who are new to publishing.  We especially encourage new and less established artists and writers to submit work. We will accept unpublished work only.  Simultaneous submissions are okay, but please let us know if your work is accepted elsewhere as soon as you know.  We accept all styles.  For all contributors:  Please, please do not send us your one and only copy of your manuscript or artwork. We cannot return them and cannot be held responsible for lost work.  Send us copies of your work only.

Poetry
Any genre or form is acceptable.  All subject matter is acceptable.  Poetry that draws one in and makes one feel is desirable. Writing that speaks of the human condition and/or of socially relevant concepts is very desirable.  We are not usually receptive to rhyming but you can try submitting if you must.  We absolutely will not publish any work that promotes racism, homophobia, abuse, etc.  Profanity or pornography if its use is primarily for the sake of shock value also does not interest us.  In general, send work that speaks truthfully from the heart avoiding tried true cliches. Find your own voice and speak honestly.

Art & Photography
Send b/w or color work that shows an original point of view and a fresh eye. Work that reflects the diversity of our culture is especially desirable.   Size of work should generally be no smaller than 5x7 and no larger than 11x17. It is preferable that you send your work on disc (in pc format, if possible).  If you want to send us a URL where we can go to see your work, that would be fine.

Short Fiction
Send us your best work--8 pages or less for short stories, 10 for novel excerpts.  We like to be shown what characters feel, not be told what they feel.  Though we will read all submissions, please play close attention the page limitations.  Work with us.

Essays, Articles, Interviews, Book Reviews
Please be aware that even though we are a slightly left of center journal politically, we will consider all viewpoints.  We want work that is interesting socially, culturally, and politically relevant. We strongly believe in free speech and honesty but we will not be the vehicle for work that spews hatred, intolerance, or violence.

Chapbooks/Novel Excerpts
We encourage you to submit your chapbooks or novel excerpts for consideration of inclusion in our quarterly feature sections.  As stated above, novel excerpts should be no longer than 10 pages and chapbooks should contain no more than 10-15 short poems or 5-10 long poems.

Legal
We take first electronic rights or one time rights and reserve the option to archive your work in our archived issues. Copyright remains with the author. If you are submitting work to multiple publications, please notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. If your work is published in Arts and Letters Magazine and is then later accepted elsewhere, we  expect that you will credit us as "first or previously published in Arts and Letters Magazine". We currently do not pay contributors, but will make every effort to see that many people will see your work.
